Fun Fact: Torquay State School was originally opened on 21st January 1901 as a provisional school, meaning that it had less than 30 pupils.It was built on land owned by the parents at the corner of Barnstaple and Honiton Streets. The school was closed and rebuilt at the current location of Tavistock Street and Torquay Terrace in 1937. Torquay State School has about 350 students and a school ethos that is based on good old-fashioned values.

Hervey Bay Special School is a purpose-built facility for students with intellectual and multiple disabilities.
The school was originally built in the early ’80s with 5 purpose-built buildings. Over the years, the school has been extended, adding a Library, a Large Administration Building, 3 double demountable classrooms, (each with a built-in kitchen), and a refurbished tuck shop and general kitchen. There is also a Multipurpose Hall which houses a gym, kitchen, and Snoezelen Room. Excellent outdoor facilities include two junior playgrounds and a bike track. All classrooms and learning areas are air-conditioned, ensuring that the health and safety of all students and their medical needs are catered for.
Hervey Bay Special School is fortunate enough to have 3 school buses that assist with various transport needs including extra-curricular programs, work placements, community access programs, sports carnivals, school camps, excursions, and music eisteddfods.
Hervey Bay State High Schools
There are two public or state Hervey Bay high schools to choose from, Hervey Bay State High School located in Pialba opened in 1964, and Urangan State High School in Urangan opened in 1992.
Hervey Bay High School is a co-ed school providing quality education to about 1355 students from years 7 to 12 . Offering a wide curriculum including a full range of traditional subjects as well as specialist fields of marine studies, agricultural science, information and communication technologies, vocational education programs, traineeships and apprenticeships and, first year university subjects through the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Hervey Bay Alternative High School Options
There are two alternative high school options in Hervey Bay that cater especially to the needs of students that prefer a different type of high school experience. Of course, there is also a vocational path via Tafe (but that option has been included under our adult education section).
Carinity Education Glendyne is a Special Assistance School which provides an alternative educational setting for students with high-level needs. The school also caters for students with social and emotional disabilities, and/or those that may be at risk of disengagement from education. Likewise, those students that may do better in a setting with flexible learning structures with a focus on developing social and life skills that equip them with strategies to help overcome day-to-day life challenges rather than on an academic curriculum.
Hervey Bay Performing Arts College was founded in 2017 specifically catering to students wishing to focus on the performing arts industry. The school believes in nurturing and guiding students to reach their full potential both academically & practically. In collaboration with Cairns School of Distance Education, they strive to provide students with the best possible alternate high school experience.
