SCHOOLS

River Heads Hervey Bay doesn’t have any schools that are within close proximity, but there are plenty within a short fifteen minutes drive away. The closest schools are located in the suburb of Urangan, although if heading along the back roads towards Pialba, there are several schools in Urraween and Wondunna / Kawungan areas that are also only about the same time frame by car.  School buses do service the area as well.

TRANSPORT

You’ll need a car if you live in River Heads Hervey Bay because the area is not so great for public transport, although there is a local school bus that services enabling students to get to their closest schools and/or connecting buses. 

SHOPS & SERVICES

The local River Heads Shopping Village offers a convenience store that sells limited groceries and takeaway is located on River Heads Road (changes to Ariadne St).  There is also a small shopping village near the airport about ten to fifteen minutes away (petrol, chemist, hairdresser, bottle shop, IGA, medical & dental).
Woolworths, Urangan Central Shopping Centre, and Aldi are just a few more minutes up the road with other local services and amenities available.

River Heads Location, History & Development

An Aboriginal tribe, known as the Butchulla people lived in the region for many generations. Originally named Bingham, the area was renamed River Heads in 1986. The Bingham State School opened in 1915, closing in 1926.  

Situated on a small peninsula of land at the mouth of the Mary River (previously named the Fraser River); the once sleepy fishing village has grown immensely and has become a stunning residential community with acreage properties boasting breathtaking extensive water views out across Fraser Island and/or hinterland panoramic landscapes.

The River Heads Shopping Village opened in 2006, with Kingfisher Bay Resort Fraser Island relocating its mainland operations to the Shopping Village in 2010, in turn making River Heads QLD the primary gateway to the World Heritage Listed Island. 2016 saw a$7.5M upgrade to River Heads Roadmaking for much safer access to the area for locals and visitors. The road’s drainage was also greatly improved. That same year to accommodate growth and an influx of residents into the area, council changed some properties from rural to residential zoning. Regular upgrades over the years have been completed to the multiple boat ramps, with the addition of a new floating pontoon jetty also making it easier to launch and board boats with future plans for additional works.
